Change is Hard…
Leaving my full time job three months ago was hard. Unlike many people who only have a few weeks, I had four full months to prepare for my last day and so did the team that I worked with. Regardless of how confident I felt in my decision or of the amount of time to prepare it was still hard.
Whether it’s changing jobs, changing locations, or changes in something else in your life, it’s just hard.
An article was shared with me last week with a statistic that 72% of people who have left a job during the great resignation were surprised that the new role or company was different that they were led to believe based on their interviewing experience. We could dive into all the reasons why this statistic may be true but I think a big part of it is simply this:
Change is hard.
Adjusting to a new normal is hard.
If you’re in the middle of any sort of change or thinking about making a change within your career, don’t be discouraged by the hard moments. Change is hard, adjusting to a new normal is hard and more than anything it takes time.
Take the pressure off. Everything doesn’t have to be perfect 100% of the time. You can make a change that is the absolute best decision for you and it can still be hard.
Be patient and be kind to yourself.
Remind yourself, as many times as it takes, of the reason you’ve made this change.
Talk it out. If you’ve started a new job and things aren’t going how you expected, talk with your supervisor, talk with a friend, talk with a career coach, talk with someone you trust.
Change is hard but that doesn’t mean you made the wrong choice or that you shouldn’t have made the change.
